Ijaw Youth Want Amnesty Programme Extended

The Ijaw Youth Council, IYC, has
expressed mixed feelings and
concerns over the inaugural address
of President Muhammadu Buhari in
relation to the Niger Delta region.
According to a statement issued by
Eric Omare, the spokesman of IYC,
and made available to journalists
in Yenagoa on Sunday, there is
need to review the terminal date of
the Amnesty Programme to
accommodate those who are yet to
complete the scheme.
“President Muhammadu Buhari in
his speech said that the amnesty
programme for ex-Niger Delta
agitators would end by December
2015. The IYC appreciates the fact
that the amnesty programme
cannot continue forever and
therefore must have a terminal
date. However, the questions on the
lips of beneficiaries and
stakeholders in the Niger Delta
region are: what would happen to
those that have not been trained at
as December 2015. And what about
those still undergoing training or
have not completed their training?”
Mr. Omare said that the
termination of the programme
would throw up challenges for
beneficiaries of the programme
who were still undergoing training
and were at different level of
training. The IYC spokesman said
the group expected the Federal
Government to allay fears of
beneficiaries who were in different
parts of the world and were
worried that their trainings might
be affected if the programme was
terminated in December 2015. He
added that the case of substantial
number of ex-agitators who had not
been trained was even more
worrisome.
He, therefore, appealed to the
Federal Government to address
challenges before the programme
was terminated. On streamlining
projects and programmes in the
Niger Delta region to make them
more effective, IYC said it would
support any step of the Federal
Government to strengthen
institutions responsible for the
development of the Niger Delta
region.
The group applauded the planned
streamlining of policies to rapidly
develop the region. “We, however,
wish to advice that any effort
toward restructuring
developmental institutions and
projects should have the input of
the people of the region at the
heart of the process. “The people of
the Niger Delta must be the ones to
decide the shape of developmental
institutions in the region.’’
The IYC said it had expected
President Buhari to address issues
such as cleaning up of the Niger
Delta environment, implementation
of the UNEP report on Ogoni. He
added that also left out of the
inaugural address was the menace
of oil theft which had greatly
contributed to environmental
degradation in the Niger Delta
region, which Mr. Buhari promised
to tackle during the presidential
campaigns.

Man Forced To Drink Petrol For Stealing Petrol In Edo

A middle- aged man is currently
being detained by operatives of Edo
State Police Command for allegedly
siphoning diesel from a truck
belonging to a beverage company
located at Ikpoba Hill, in Ikpoba
Okha Local Government Area of the
State.

It was gathered that the suspect was
caught at about 4 : 00 am on 27
May by a vigilant night guard in
the area , who noticed a flow of
diesel on the ground close to where
the truck was parked.
He allegedly traced the flow to the
truck where he found the suspect
channelling the petroleum product
into waiting jerry cans.
Sighting the night guard, the
suspect was said to have fled the
scene , but the guard who raised an
alarm, later overpowered him after
a hot chase.
The alarm raised by the night guard
was said to have drawn the
attention of residents and traders
in the area who descended on the
suspect. Timely intervention of
policemen from Aduwawa police
division however saved him from
being lynched and later whisked
away.
An eyewitness who does not want
his name in print, said the suspect
confessed that he belonged to a
syndicate specialised in stealing
petroleum products from packed
trucks in the area.
“He ( suspect) confessed that there
are other people in the same
business with him and that they
have stolen more than 1 , 000 litres
before .The truck belongs to one Mr
. Imafidon and the guard who
caught him said that he has been
looking for those boys for sometime
now.
“The residents, especially truck
drivers , were angry after he
demonstrated how he siphons the
product. So, they tied him up and
put the hoose in his mouth , ” the
source added.
When contacted , Edo Police Public
Relations Officer, DSP Stephen
Onwochei , said he was yet to be
briefed on the incident . He
however added that the matter
could have been handled by the
Divisional Police Officer , based on
the level of the offence.
“I have not been briefed on that .
But, obviously, it is a case of
stealing which the division can
handle, ” Onwochei said .

Don’t Expect Change Overnight – Buhari Reiterates

The President elect, Mohammadu
Buhari, on Sunday said the change
Nigerians are expecting cannot
happen overnight.
Buhari also said the incoming
administration will, in the short
term, lay emphasis on agriculture
and mining to deal with the
challenge of youth unemployment.
He said this while receiving in
audience members of some
northern groups, led by Alhaji
Maitama Sule and the Northern
Elders Forum, in Abuja, on Sunday.
According to him, the task before
the northern leaders, especially the
clergy, is to help sensitise the
public that the change they desire
and voted for, cannot happen
overnight.
He pointed out that it took 16 years
to destroy the nation’s economy,
noting that the nation earned more
within the last 16 years under the
Peoples Democratic Party, than it
did since 1914, but that most of it
was frittered away.
He said, “The biggest message is to
try and persuade the people that it
is not possible to change the state
of affairs now.
It took 16 years and those 16 years,
most of you know it better than
myself, Nigeria earned revenue
more than what it earned from
1914 to then.
“You know that we used to have
Nigeria Airways, Nigeria National
Shipping Line, Nigeria Railways.
Where are they now? Where is the
infrastructure? Between then and
now and what we earned in-
between and what is on the
ground.
“That is how efficiently how the
PDP managed Nigeria in the last 16
years. Now we have invariably
inherited all the problems,
especially in the north east.”
Buhari added, “So, you have to
convince your constituencies that
you have virtually arrived at the
wrong time and that they have to
temper their expectation with some
justice towards the leadership.
“I think whatever has to be
deployed especially in the churches
and mosques, this is the quickest
way to communicate this to the
ordinary people, continue to
remind them if all the things I said
in all the states I visited.
“We picked three fundamental
problems. The first is security. The
country has to be secured before
anything can be put in place and
then the economy.
The fact is that more than 60 per
cent of the Nigerian population are
youths and most of them, whether
they have been to school or not, are
unemployed and this is the biggest
danger if we don’t know it.”

I Expect Buhari To Persecute My Ministers, Aides – President Jonathan

President Goodluck Jonathan on
Sunday gave an insight into the
fate that awaits him under the
incoming government of the
President-elect, Gen. Muhammadu
Buhari (retd.), saying he and
ministers as well as other aides
who served under him would be
persecuted.
He said he and his ministers would
have hard times because of some
critical decisions they took while in
office.
Jonathan also looked back at all the
benefits that had come his way as a
Nigerian, saying he was ready to
pay the supreme price for the
nation.
The President spoke at a
thanksgiving and farewell service
organised in his honour at the
Cathedral Church of the Advent,
Life Camp, Gwarinpa, Abuja.
Jonathan who was accompanied by
his wife, Patience, said considering
what God had done in his life, he
wished he could dance like the
biblical King David but he kept
missing his steps whenever he
made attempts.
He said only a few Nigerians within
his age bracket were as lucky as he
is because he had not suffered any
lack, not because he is hardworking
but by the grace of God.
He said after reflecting on the
benefits which included the
scholarships he enjoyed in school
and the various political offices he
had occupied, he should be able to
do anything in the interest of the
country, including paying the
supreme price.
He added that he is leaving office of
the President as a fulfilled and very
happy man.
Jonathan said, “I want to thank God
for what he has done for me and
my family. I wish to dance more
than David, if I tried to dance, I
missed my steps.
“I have all the reasons to thank
God. Very few of those in my age
brackets have been that lucky. All
through my education I was on
government scholarship. I have not
suffered lack not because I am
hardworking, but by God’s grace.
“When I look at the whole picture
of my life up to when I became the
President of this country, I say that
if soldiers and police officers that
have not received 0. 5 percent of
the benefits that I have received
from the state can lay their lives
for this country, I should do
anything in the interest of Nigeria,
including paying the supreme
price.
“As long as live, I will continue to
do my best for the state because the
state has helped me as a person.
“I have to thank Nigerians
especially my state for giving me
the opportunity to serve as deputy
governor and the whole country
gave me the opportunity to serve as
Vice President and then President,
first was to complete the tenure of
the late president and later serve as
President from which I am exiting
now as a very happy and fulfilled
man.”
Saying that hard decisions have
their own cost, Jonathan said he
was ready to pay for some of the
costly decisions he took while in
charge of the country.
He said experience had shown him
that people would at a time desert
anybody who takes tough decisions
like he did.
He said he had always hold the
belief that more of his friends
would desert him as time goes on.
He recalled the story of the last
ruler of apartheid South Africa who
was divorced by his wife for
accepting to abolish minority rule
in the country, and said jokingly
that he hoped his wife will not also
divorce him after he might left
office.
Mrs. Jonathan replied with a shout
of “Nooooo”.
Her response was greeted with a
loud applause by congregation
members.
The President also prepared the
minds of the ministers and aides
who served under him, saying
though times await them all.
He said, “I believe there are
reasons for everything. Some hard
decisions have their own cost, no
doubt about that.
“That I have ran the government
this way that stabilised certain
things, the electoral process and
other things that brought stability
into this country. They were very
costly decisions which I myself
must be ready to pay for.
“Some people come to me and say
this or that person, is he not your
friend that benefitted? Is it not
your government that this person
benefitted from? But this is what
the person is saying.
“But I used to say that worse
statements will come. If you take
certain decisions, you should know
that those close to you will even
abandon you at some point.
“And I tell them that more of my
so-called friends will disappear.
When FW De Clark took the
decision to abolish minority rule in
RSA, even his wife divorced him. I
hope my wife will not divorce me.
But that is the only decision that
has made RSA to still remain a
global player by this time. If we
still had that minority rule there, by
this time, nobody will be talking
about RSA.
“If you take certain decisions, it
might be good for the generality of
the people but it might affect people
differently. So for ministers and
aides who served with me, I
sympathise with them, they will be
persecuted. And they must be
ready for that persecution.
“Quoting Tai Solarin, may your
ways be rough. To my ministers, I
wish you what I wish myself. They
will have hard times, we will all
have hard times. Our ways will be
rough.”
Jonathan however said he was
happy that the ordinary people
appreciate what he did and that,
according to him, is the most
important.
He said it was not what the elite or
the privileged few talk or say about
his administration that matters but
what the majority of the Nigerian
public think about his actions and
inactions.
He expressed delight that he came
to Abuja with his family peacefully
and they are returning peacefully.
The President thanked the church
and Nigerians for standing by him
even at his most difficult times.
He said even on the March 28
presidential election which he lost
to Buhari, there were many people
who supported him nationwide.
Despite exiting the Presidential
Villa, Jonathan promised that he
would continue to pray for the
country and the Buhari
administration.
He said the outcome of the election
went that way because God wanted
it to be so for a purpose.
“Even for the election, we had
people who supported us all over
the country but things went the
way they did because God wanted it
that way for a purpose.
“We will continue to pray for the
peace of the country and for the
success of the incoming
administration.
“When the country is in good
shape, people benefit. When things
are going well, people are happy.
You don’t need to know Mr.
President or Mr. Governor.
“The issue is not about Jonathan or
Buhari or any other person. The
issue is how the government
functions: stability, buoyant
economy that will enable Nigeria to
move forward and live happy. That
is our interest, that is my prayer
point.
“All religious groups should pray
for the country,” he concluded.
Jonathan thereafter requested that
his favourite him, “Stand by me” be
sung again.
He said apart from inspiring him,
the hymn makes him aware of the
fact that whatever one does there
will be storms.
He said the assurance in the hymn
was that once such a person means
well for the people, God will always
stand by him.

President Jonathan’s Portrait Disappears In Kano Offices

The portrait of President Goodluck
Jonathan is gradually disappearing
in federal institutions, business
centres and other public offices in
Kano State.
Constitutionally , Jonathan ’s
portrait should adorn public offices
and institutions until his handover
on May 29.
But our correspondent observed
that the portrait of President- elect,
General Muhammadu Buhari, have
taken over in many offices.
The development confirms many
cannot wait for Jonathan to get out
of office on May 29.
As a result, the demand for the
portrait of Buhari has soared with
each going for as high as N 1 , 500
on many streets of Kano .
It was gathered that manufacturers
of the portraits have run out of
stock after making stupendous
money .
In one of the offices visited by our
correspondent, Buhari’s portrait
welcomes visitors at the reception .
With Buhari spotting a red cap , a
spectacle and a white male flowing
gown, the portraits has an
inscription: His Excellency General
Muhammadu Buhari (GCFR ),
President Commander in Chief of
the Armed Forces Federal Republic
of Nigeria .
A café operator, who craved for
anonymity, along Civic Centre Road
where the portrait of the president
-elect was conspicuously hanged on
the wall , said : “Buhari has won
the election and that was the
change we were looking for and the
change has eventually come .
“ So, we wouldn ’t want to waste
time delaying the time for his
inauguration before we start
hanging his portrait .”

Buhari Shocks APC Governors, Rejects Ministerial List

PRESIDENT-elect, General
Muhammadu Buhari appeared to
have dashed the hopes of the
governors elected on the platform
of the All Progressives Congress
(APC) when he rejected their plans
to submit a ministerial list to him.
The APC governors, led by
Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo
State, had, last Tuesday, visited
Buhari in Abuja to pledge loyalty
and make some demands.
At the meeting, some requests were
placed on the table openly, while
the request to drop the list of
possible ministers came up for
discussion behind the closed door.
Sources close to the meeting
between the governors and General
Buhari indicated that the state chief
executives came out of the visit
with heavy minds.
Planning to maintain the tradition
already instituted by the Peoples
Democratic Party (PDP) where the
state governors as party leaders in
the states are requested to submit
list of possible ministers and
Ambassadorial appointees to the
president, the governors threw the
request at Buhari.
But it was learnt that the General
rejected the proposal and declared
that the Constitution does not
mandate him to take a list of
ministerial nominees from them.
The president-elect was also said to
have rejected the call for a bailout
for the states that have been unable
to pay salaries, with a source
informing Sunday Tribune that the
General flatly rejected the proposal,
saying the he was aware the
Federal Government was not owing
the states their allocations.
A source close to the discussion told
the Sunday Tribune that General
Buhari told the governors that those
of them in their second terms could
not complain about the state of
government finances, as they have
all been collecting allocations from
the Federal Government all along.
A source in the know said: “The
governors practically went out of
the visit with their tails between
their legs.
The General first threw aside the
request that he grant bailout to the
states.
He told them that the governors
going for second term in office
cannot complain about the state of
the economy, having collected all
their allocations to date from the
Federal Government. He ruled out
the possibility of bailout.
“The General was also very
unequivocal when he was told that
the governors want to submit a
ministerial list to him.
He clearly said he cannot go into
that discussion. He insisted that the
Constitution does not mandate him
to collect such list from the
governors and that the state chief
executives should concentrate on
sourcing good materials that would
help them run the states
adequately.”
The source quoted Buhari as saying
that “I do not think we can discuss
that issue of Ministerial list.
The Constitution clearly does not
mandate me to take a list from the
governors.
To me, the governors should
concentrate on getting good hands
to help them in discharging their
duties in the states.”
The APC governors had made a
meal out of their meeting with
General Buhari last week, with
media reports indicating that they
were in Abuja to submit ministerial
lists to the president-elect.
But the sources said that they left
the meeting disappointed, as the
General turned down their two
major requests.
