There has been so much talk about
how much was spent on advertising
before the last general election in
Nigeria but no one could say for sure
how much was spent.
But a report by Compliance and
Content Monitoring Ltd (CCM)
reveals that the Peoples Democratic
Party (PDP) and the All Progressives
Party (APC) spent a combined N3.23
billion on political campaign
advertisements for this year’s
general elections, according to a
report at the weekend.
According to the report PDP spent
for about N2.5 billion (77 per cent)
and APC spent N728 million (23 per
cent).
CCM said the media advertisements
were placed on radio, television,
press and billboards for the PDP and
the APC presidential campaigns
between December 2014 and March.
The report was unveiled after a
thorough analysis of over 260
broadcast media (radio and
television), 48 print (newspapers and
magazines) media and over 1,000
outdoor billboards across the
country.
The firm focused on the two main
parties, taking into cognisance the
nation’s geographical zones, the
advertising campaigns of the
different political parties,
individuals and groups in support of
the presidential candidates.
The Managing Director of CCM
Limited, Mr. Tunde Onadele, who
spoke at the unveiling of the report,
said about 253 creative materials
were deployed across radio and
television channels in all the 260+
stations monitored by CCM, with PDP

107 materials.
The split across media platforms
showed that the two parties utilised
mostly television and press platforms
for over 85 per cent of total
campaign spending.
The report highlighted that gross
media rates were used in CCM’s
calculations and the data across the
monitored stations account for about
85 per cent of the national coverage.

President Obama passes vote of confidence on Buhari’s leadership style

President Barrack Obama on Monday expressed confidence in the ability of President Mihammadu Buhari to tackle the multiple challenges facing Nigeria. Obama gave the assurance in Washington DC, when he received President Muhammedu Buhari, who was on 4-day official visit to the U.S.
According to him, Buhari has come with a clear agenda to tackle the problem of insecurity occasioned by the activities of Boko Haram sect as well as other violence criminal activities.
Obama expressed appreciation to Buhari’s leadership style so far, saying that his administration would continue to assist and help Nigeria in overcoming its challenges.
“It is a great pleasure to welcome President Buhari and his delegation here in the White House for his first visit since the historic election that took place .
“Nigeria is obviously one of the most important countries in the world, one of the most important countries in the African continent.
“Recently, we saw an election in which a peaceful transition to a new government took place.
Nevertheless, the people of Nigeria understand that only through a peaceful political process that can change takes place. “President Buhari came into office with reputation for integrity and a very clear agenda that is to make sure that he has been bringing safely security and peace to his country.
“He is very concerned about the spread and the violence that is taking place there and the atrocities and has a very clear agenda in defeating Boko Haram and extremists. “I want to emphasised how much I appreciate President Buhari’s work so far.
I have seen him put together a team so that we can do everything that we can to help him succeed and help the people of Nigeria succeed.
Obama also assured that American government would continue to partner with Nigeria in ensuring political stability in Africa and around the world. He described Nigeria as one of the most important countries in the world and congratulated the country for conducting peaceful elections.
He also commended Nigeria for taking leadership position in the fight against the spread of diseases like Ebola and Polio and pledged that his administration would continue to accord Nigeria the necessary recognition to bring peace to Africa and the world.
In his remarks, President Buhari commended the American Government under the leadership of President Obama for mounting pressure on former Jonathan’s administration to conduct a free and fair election in Nigeria. According to him, Nigeria will remain forever grateful to America for this singular act.
The visit of the Secretary of State before the elections to see the former president, the Chairman of Independent National Electoral Commission and the opposition was a positive trend that “saw us through the elections.”
“And the maintenance of pressure by United States mainly and Europe to make sure that the elections were free, fair and credible made us to be where we are now. “It would have been almost impossible if the United States did not maintain the pressure on the former Nigerian Government.”
Buhari, therefore, thanked Obama for inviting him to visit his country as well as his administration’s support to Nigeria.
Governors of Nasarawa, Borno, Imo, Oyo and Edo States as well as some Nigerian government officials accompanied the president during the visit.
South African pastor reacts to his arrest, says no one can destroy him

Controversial South African pastor, Penuel Mnguni who was just yesterday granted bail after he was arrested and charged for 'cruelty against animals' after forcing his members to swallow a live snake during one of his church services, says no one can destroy him because 'he is already destroyed'. He said the South African police do not know who they are fighting.
“Maybe I need help if someone thinks I’m possessed let them come and deliver me, but if nothing come out then I will deliver you.
Then one demon came and held her hands on the head of the Man of God but instead that demon was delivered. All laws, constitution and bi-lows are powerless; if they want to arrest me let them also arrest (Nandos).
God made these animals for us to eat; the world is fighting today because we used the same weapon. No one can destroy me, already I’m destroyed. Police don’t know who they are fighting against. There are people who are religious out there. These prophets who spoke about this long before it came to be and he was criticized same as my father.
If you go to heaven and not find me it’s not heaven. To God Be the Glory"he said

U.S. To Trace Nigerian Stolen Assets, Boost Military Help

The United States will offer to help Nigeria’s new leader track down billions of dollars in stolen assets and increase U.S. military assistance to fight Islamic militants, U.S. officials said, as Washington seeks to “reset” ties with Africa’s biggest economy.
President Muhammadu Buhari visit to the US is viewed by the U.S. administration as a chance to set the seal on improving ties since he won a March election hailed as Nigeria’s first democratic power transition in decades.
U.S. cooperation with Buhari’s predecessor, Goodluck Jonathan, had virtually ground to a halt over issues including his refusal to investigate corruption and human rights abuses by the Nigerian military.
“President Barack Obama has long seen Nigeria as arguably the most important strategic country in sub-Saharan Africa,” U.S.
Deputy Secretary of State Tony Blinken told Reuters. “The question is would there be an opportunity to deepen our engagement and that opportunity is now.”
The improving ties with Nigeria, Africa’s biggest oil producer, come as U.S. relations have cooled with two other traditional Africa powers – Egypt and South Africa.
U.S. officials have said they are willing to send military trainers to help Nigeria counter a six-year-old northern insurgency by the Boko Haram Islamist movement.
Since Buhari’s election, Washington has committed $5 million in new support for a multi-national task force set up to fight the group. This is in addition to at least $34 million it is providing to Nigeria, Chad, Cameroon and Niger for equipment and logistics.
Buhari’s move on July 13 to fire military chiefs appointed by Jonathan clears the way for more military cooperation, U.S. officials say.
“We’ve made clear there are additional things that can be done especially now that there is a new military leadership in place,” a senior U.S. official said.
Another senior U.S. official said Washington was urging Buhari, a Muslim from the country’s north, to step up regional Mcooperation against the militants and to provide more aid to afflicted communities to reduce the group’s recruiting power.
Buhari has said his priorities are strengthening Nigeria’s economy, hard-hit by the fall in oil prices, boosting investment, and tackling “the biggest monster of all” – corruption.
“Here too he is looking to deepen
collaboration and one of the things he is focused on is asset recovery,” the official said.
“He is hopeful we can help them recover some of that.”
In 2014, the United States took control of more than $480 million siphoned away by former Nigerian dictator Sani Abacha and his associates into banks around the world.
Washington has broad powers to track suspicious funds and enforce sanctions against individuals.
Jonathan fired Nigeria’s central bank governor in February last year after he raised questions about the disappearance of about $20 billion in oil revenues.
Johnnie Carson, a former assistant secretary of state, said Washington should not let security issues overshadow the need for closer trade and investment ties.
“Nigeria is the most important country in Africa,” said Carson, currently an adviser to the U.S. Institute of Peace.
Now more than ever, “the relationship with Nigeria should not rest essentially on a security and military-to-military relationship,” he added.
Lauren Ploch Blanchard, an Africa specialist with the non-partisan Congressional Research Services, said the U.S. challenge was to work with Buhari while giving him time to address the country’s vast problems.
How Buhari will handle the campaign against Boko Haram is still an unknown, Blanchard said.

“Why We Chose Oliseh For The Super Eagles Job” – NFF President, Pinnick Defends Ex-Captain

“President of the Nigeria Football Federation Amà ju Pinnick has for the first time spoken on why former captain Sunday Oliseh was considered worthy replacing sacked Stephen Keshi as the next Super Eagles coach.
Oliseh, a former Dortmund defensive midfielder is set to be named Eagles coach this week in Abuja and speaking at the Warri City stadium during yesterday’s league match between Warri Wolves and Enyimba, Pinnick said Oliseh was deemed the best hand for the Eagles because of his high intellectual capacity in coaching and
recommendations by the Federation of International Football Associations.
Oliseh has a UEFA Pro Licence certificate, regarded as the highest coaching certificate in the world but comes with a baggage of no experience managing a top team in Europe, Africa, America and no prior experience coaching of a junior national side.
But rising to defend their choice of Oliseh, Pinnick said the best experience needed to do the job were intellectual capacity and prior experience as a player.
“I absolutely feel that we have made the right choice by picking Oliseh to handle the Super Eagles. In this age of technological advancement, we must start doing things differently.
We need a coach with sound intellectual capacity and one who has the highest coaching certificate. He is working with FIFA at the technical study group.
The world recognises him and FIFA even recommended him. He has the passion to coach the Eagles and that is also important for us.
“On his lack of experience, Nigerians must realise that he’s not the first to be first named in the world.
Berti Vogts and Juergen Klinsmann didn’t have experience when they were appointed, so why the noise about Oliseh”, asked Pinnick rhetorically”

5 Reasons Your SEX Life Is Suffering In Your Relationship!

Are you and your lover getting as much sex as you’d like? If you aren’t you’re not the only ones.
A recent study by “YouGov” found that 64% of couples said they would like to have sex at least a few times a month, but the same study found that only 38% of couples were actually having sex that often. So If you want to use the bedroom for more than just sleeping, check to see if any of these problems could be getting in the way of you and your boo!
1. TECHNOLOGY
As much as modern technology is a must, it can impact on our lives negatively in ways we may not have considered. A recent study found that couples who had a TV in the bedroom had sex 50% less than couples who didn’t. Add smartphones and laptops on top and you can be endlessly distracted.
Implement a no technology rule in the bedroom from time to time and see what a difference it makes.
2. DIFFERENT BED TIMES
If you go to bed at 10pm sharp but your partner stays up watching the latest ‘Netflix series’ until 1am, the chances of sex are pretty slim. Try to schedule a couple of nights a week where you go to bed at the same time. It might feel a little silly to both of you to schedule sex, but it will certainly help out in the long run.
3. NO TIME FOR EACH OTHER AT ALL
A recent poll found that people who are in committed relationships actually only spend less than 2% of their normal working day in each other’s company, and three in ten couples said their relationship was suffering as a result of this. Quality time is very important, so be sure to schedule time in together and make sure you honour it religiously.
4. NOT LOOKING AFTER YOURSELVES
If you don’t feel good, you’re less likely to want to make someone else feel good. When you’re in tip top health you’re more likely to look good and feel confident about your body, but if you feel tired, under the weather or perhaps over indulge on booze, you both won’t feel very sexy at all. Being mindful about your health will increase your libido, and that would be a plus in the bedroom!
5. BOREDOM
If your sex life has become routine, you’ll be much less inclined to indulge, so you need to try and spice things up a bit. Find ways to change your routine, be imaginative about how, where and when you both have sex, and try surprising yourselves with some new moves from time to time. As they say variety is the spice of life!
Sound Sultan Is The Father I Never Had, Seyi Shay Shower Praises On Singer

In a recent interview, Nigerian
songstress Seyi Shay has explained
how Sound Sultan and his wife have
been her back bone ever since she
returned to Nigeria in 2012.
According to the singer, she never
lived with her father because she
was from a polygamous family, but
lived with her mom all her life, who
is now sadly late, and that is why she
sees Sultan as the father she never
had because he has been a father
figure to her. She also praised
Flytime boss, Cecil Hammonds for
giving her a ladder to climb. Hear
her;
Sound Sultan is like my dad really,
the dad I never had. He is my
mentor, he’s also my song writer; he
and his wife are like my mum and
dad. It’s a relationship that’s
indescribable, God just used him as a
vessel to really expose me. I used to
go round with Naija Ninjas and
Radio tours and he kept introducing
me as his protégé. Cecil also used to
tell people to put me on their shows
that I’m good. Between the two of
them, I flourished a lot.

Abia driver arrested for alleged rape of female passenge
36 -year-old taxi driver, John Madu, is now cooling off his heels behind bars in Umuahia, the Abia State capital, for allegedly raping a female passenger.
According to the Abia State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Ezekiel Onyeke, the 24-year-old female passenger, who was said to be travelling from Lagos to Obehie, was reported to be the only passenger in the taxi when the incident occurred.
He said the victim had boarded the
commercial car in Aba after she arrived from Lagos and was traveling to Obehie, a suburb of Aba, when the randy driver decided to sexually assault her.
According to the police spokesman, the driver midway into the journey feigned that his cab had run out of fuel and stopped at a lonely place on the Aba-Port Harcourt Expressway, where he raped the suspect.
Police said the pleas by the victim for the suspect not to defile her as she was a virgin, fell on the driver’s deaf ears as he allegedly overpowered her and raped her right inside the cab.
He also said help could not come the way of the victim on time as the incident occurred very late in the night.
Onyeke added, “At a spot along the road, the driver pulled off the road, claiming that he ran out of fuel. The victim, who was not comfortable with the claims of the suspect, left the vehicle on the excuse that she wanted to ease herself.
“The driver, who suspected rightly that the victim wanted to escape, went after her and forcefully dragged the helpless victim back to the vehicle and raped her despite pleas from the victim that she be spared as she has vowed to keep her virginity till marriage.
“The suspect, who fell asleep after the act and did not know when the victim left the vehicle, was woken up by men of the Operation Safer Highway team on patrol of Obehie, who wanted to know what he was doing alone in the vehicle and on the deserted road at that hour of the night and he told the Police officers that he ran out of fuel.”
The PPRO said luck ran out on the suspect when the victim, who was hiding in a nearby bush, quickly came out and narrated her ordeal to the police patrol team.
“The suspect was promptly arrested and handed over to the Police at Obehie,” he said.
He said the victim was later taken to Cottage Hospital, Owaza, for medical attention while the suspect, “who made useful statement to the Police,” would soon be arraigned.

Breaking News!! OAU To Be Shut Down Today

The disruption of academic, administrative and economic activities as a result of the demonstrations of the members of the Non Academic Staff Union, NASU OAU over their unpaid accumulated 64 months allowances may lead to the closure of the university anytime from Monday, July 13.
The Students’ Union president, Akande Omotayo a.k.a TY addressing the journalists today confirmed his knowledge of the campus situation and has said the Union is observing events critically. The president has said he is waiting till Monday when a Congress of students will be called to determine on shutting down the university if the current situation of inconvenience persists.
According to the Union leader, the implication of the Students’ Union shutting the university clearly means that only the Union can re-open it upon recommendations by leaders to her members.
TY further expressed displeasure over the hardship students have been subjected by the fight between NASU and the management.
He described the polluted environment of the university as students sitting on ‘time bomb’ as endemic can break out any moment from now.
“As a Students’ Union leadership, what we have to do is to try to ensure our students do not suffer for what they have to suffer for…
Our solidarity with NASU is not only based on principle but also based on ameliorating the poor welfare conditions of our students.
“We demanded for an emergency meeting with the management which we had yesterday.
Management said we should try to hold on and we made it clear to them, the issue of that our students have resolved not to go to classes does not mean that you (management) and NASU should continue to punish us.
That we are still on this campus alone is still punishment.
Resolve with NASU and if you don’t resolve with NASU, give us light, water and vehicular movement and our students will go to class.
“…the last time a hostel was cleaned on this university campus was last week Thursday.
That means this university as I speak with you is sitting on a ‘time bomb’ because at any time from now, there can be an endemic. That is the consequence!
NASU’s position
The chairman of NASU OAU,Comrade Wole Adewunmi has told journalists late last week that he does not see an end in the tunnel of the current struggle because his members are not satisfied with the commitment and promise of the management so far.
OAU Olofofo reported that the NASU chairman admitted meeting with the management in the course of the week but nothing fruitful has come forth from the meeting.
“We have been having dialogues and series of meetings here and there. They kept promising, promising and promising until today that we have finally realized that they (university management) are not serious and they do not know what they are doing. So it is better we swing into action because if we were to count the months now, it is about 64 months. How can you owe somebody an arrear of 64 months?
“We met with them yesterday, and we had a discussion. The registrar was representing the university management. They made a promise and documented and signed on agreement. Our members however were not satisfied with the decision. So I met with our members and unanimously decided to continue with the protest.
Aside the bulletin pasted around the university campus by the management before the commencement of NASU’s protests detailing the non-availability of fund as the reason for not acceding to NASU’s demands, the University management is yet to release any official statement on the current situation of campus especially the welfare of students since the demonstration.
The last time Obafemi Awolowo University witnessed normalcy as to her activities was Thursday, July 2.
President Buhari Orders Police To Vacate Rivers Local Governments Secretariats

President Muhammadu Buhari
has directed the Police and
other security agencies to comply with the court’ s order sacking local government chairmen in Rivers State until the Court of Appeal rules otherwise .
The police yesterday withdrew from the secretariats of the local governments in deference to the presidential directive.
It was learnt that Buhari gave the order to demonstrate his commitment to the Rule of Law contrary to the insinuations in some quarters , especially by the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP ) .
According to the Senior Special Assistant on Media to the President, Mallam Garba Shehu, Buhari has made it clear that he won’t stop the execution of a court judgment. Shehu, who spoke with our correspondent , said : “ It is very clear from the view of the President that the judgment on the sack of the local government chairmen in Rivers State must be respected .
“ The President made it clear that he cannot stop the judgment unless it is set aside by the Court of Appeal or the Supreme Court.
“ In fact, the President has asked the police and security agencies why they did not enforce the court order . They said they were only at the local government secretariats to secure these public institutions because they had information that there might be backlash .
“ So, there was no question of impunity by the President in Rivers State. The attack against the President was unfair by those behind it. ”
Replying a question , Shehu said: “ Actually , the police have withdrawn from the local governments. ”
But the APC governorship candidate in the state , Dr. Dakuku Peterside, yesterday condemned an alleged impunity by Governor Nyesom Wike .
Peterside, in a statement in Abuja, said apart from the questionable borrowing of N30 billion , Wike was wrong to have dissolved state institutions created with tenured security .
He said: “ I had hoped that this government would take a cue from the Buhari administration but it is becoming obvious by the day that the Wike government does not intend to tow the path of honour and statesmanship and therefore does not deserve the trust of Rivers people .
“ On our path , we are duty -bound to protect our state and the interest of all our people and those who reside here. It is that call of duty and with the highest sense of responsibility that has compelled me to speak up.
“ Let us with continuing , unwavering faith in the True God and confidence in our judicial institutions, trust that we shall soon see the end of this era of impunity, directionlessness and crass disregard for the rights of our people and the constitution of our nation.
Regardless of the darkness that has enveloped our state , we know that there is light at the end of the tunnel and we vow to leave no stone unturned until our people have reached their well – deserved Eldorado. ”
Peterside queried the alleged high- handedness of the administration of Wike and why N 30 billion was borrowed by the state in 30 days.
Peterside added: “ Six weeks after assuming office, the government has not made one single policy statement, rather it appointed the Nimi Walson Jack committee to design a blueprint for the running of government after it had taken off . A move that suggests we have the case of a rudderless state manned by persons whose only bond to the state is to siphon away our resources.
“ The mindless pursuit of vendetta against individuals, chasing of shadows and brazen impunity against the long – term interest of the state .
“ Obvious lack of commitment to the
development of Rivers State . A case in point is the security situation, which has continued to deteriorate with criminality promoted at the expense of the safety of our people .
Kidnapping and armed robbery are now rooted and government is doing nothing.
“ Poor understanding of public finance and questionable management of public funds as is evidenced in the borrowing of N 30 bn in 30 days .
“ Elevation of impunity to a new level and crass manipulation of institutions as exemplified by the needless local government council crises being orchestrated by the government .
“ Illegal dissolution of state institutions created by the constitution with tenured security . Ready examples include the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission , Local Government Service Commission , Civil Service Commission and the Rivers State House of Assembly Commission. ”

We Will Soon Release Shocking Revelations About Jonathan’s Government – APC

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has asked Nigerians to expect “shocking revelations” of the past government in the coming weeks and months.
In a statement issued in Lagos on Sunday by Lai Mohammed, national publicity secretary of the party, APC accused the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) of distorting the facts about the source of the $2.1 billion that President Muhammadu Buhari approved for sharing among the three tiers of government.
The statement also faulted the claim of Olisa Metuh, PDP spokesman, that former president Goodluck Jonathan refused to share $5.5 billion dollars from Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas (NLNG) dividends because he wanted to leave money for Buhari.
APC alleged that such money was not in the federation account, urging Buhari to probe past dividends of the NLNG.
”The revelations concerning the deep rot in the system that will come in the weeks and months ahead will shock even the most ardent critics of the Buhari administration’s salvaging efforts,” the statement read.
“Whereas the presidency corrected the initial erroneous report that the shared money was sourced from the excess crude account (ECA), the skittish opposition continued to insist it was from the ECA and that it was part of the ‘savings’ by the Jonathan administration.
”Well, we can tell Nigerians that the $2.1 billion was sourced from the $1.6 billion company income tax/education tax paid to the FG on June 17th 2015, over two weeks after the Jonathan administration left office, as well
as the $500 million tax paid by Shell.
We can’t tell Nigerians that this is the first time the payment of the income tax/education tax by the NLNG was being disclosed by any government, in addition to paying it into the federation account for sharing, hence those who call it their ‘legitimate’ earnings should be asked why they did not demand the sharing of such ‘legitimate’ earnings in the past.
”We can tell Nigerians that apart from the said $1.6 billion NLNG payment for 2015, NLNG also paid $1.4 billion as Income Tax/EducationTax in May 2014, paid $0.3 billion as education tax to the FG in 2011, 2012 and 2013 and $1.2 billion in VAT and With-holding tax to the FG since 2009.
These payments are just those made in the past six years alone, hence there were other payments before then.
“In addition, dividend payments totalling $4,728,136,946 was paid to the FG between 2004 and 2009, out of which only $127,851,348.19 was credited to the FG’s Independent account with JP Morgan, leaving a balance of over $4 billion.
The questions to ask therefore are why all the past taxes and dividends were neither fully paid into the federation account nor shared by the three tiers of government and what happened to the funds.”
”Since, according to the PDP, President Goodluck Jonathan asked that the money be ‘left for the incoming administration to manage’. It is important for the party, therefore, to tell Nigerians in which account the money was ‘saved’ because it is definitely not in the federation account.”
LASTMA Official, Who Slumped On Traffic Duty, Dies (Photo)

An official of the Lagos State Traffic
Management Authority, who slumped while controlling traffic on Ishaga Road in the Idi-Araba, Mushin area on Saturday, has died.
PUNCH Metro learnt that the official, Kazeem Lawal, was brought in dead to the Randle Hospital, Surulere, where his colleagues had rushed him.
Sunday PUNCH had reported that the official, who was among LASTMA officials on duty for an event at the Chapel of the Healing Cross, collapsed at about 1.30pm.
It was also reported that Lawal, who was gasping for breath, was rushed to a hospital after he did not respond to preliminary treatment.
Our correspondent gathered that Lawal, who was attached to LASTMA Zone 3, Iponri, died on the way to the hospital.
The matter was said to have been reported at the Alakara Police Division.
One of the colleagues of the deceased, who spoke to our correspondent on condition of anonymity, said, “He was initially taken to the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, but he could not be attended to because of the ongoing strike action. He was then rushed to the Randle Hospital where he was confirmed dead.
“We do not have any insurance policy. We do not have any hazard allowance. It is very painful.
“His family members are in disarray at present. We work round the clock, and we are usually overwhelmed. He must have collapsed from accumulated stress.
“Since the government sacked some LASTMA workers last year, there has been a burden on the workforce. Work posts, where seven personnel were handling, have been reduced to one or two.”
Our correspondent gathered that LASTMA officials, policemen and National Union of Transport Workers besieged the hospital on Sunday.
“The whole thing happened so fast and so shocking. By the time they took him to the Randle Hospital, he had died,” another LASTMA official said.
The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Kenneth Nwosu, said he would get back to our correspondent on the matter.
He said, “I am still awaiting details on the incident. I will call you back when I have them.”
The Public Relations Officer, LASTMA, Bola Ajao, could not be reached as calls put across to her phone did not connect. A text message sent to her also had yet to be replied to.

We Will Pressure Nigeria To Reverse The Anti-Gay Law – USA

The United States government has vowed to continue to press the Nigerian government to reverse its anti-gay law.
The US Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, said this during a live-web chat with journalists in Washington. Our correspondent monitored the web chat in Abuja.
Thomas-Greenfield also said that America was not bothered that Chinese companies were fast taking over the African market from their US counterparts.
President Goodluck Jonathan had on January 7, 2014 assented to the Same s*x Marriage (Prohibition) Bill 2013 which criminalises homosexuality in the country.
On January 14 when it became public that the President had signed the bill into law, the US, Canada and the European Union openly expressed reservations over the law.
Thomas-Greenfield, who said the US had adopted the protection of the rights of same-s*x people as part of its foreign policies, vowed that Washington would continue to mount and sustain pressure on Nigeria and other countries to reverse their laws against the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender community.
She said, “As a government, it is one of the highest priorities and strongest values that discrimination against anyone based on their sexual orientation and gender identity is wrong.
We believe human rights should be available to everybody.
“As a policy, we will continue to press the government of Nigeria as well as other governments who have provided legislation that discriminate against the LGBT
community.”
Thomas-Greenfiled, who did not agree that pressuring Nigeria to reverse the anti-gay law amounted to interference, said the country and Uganda had the hardest legislation on the gay community.
She said, “This is very much a work in progress, but I think you will agree with me that the law in Nigeria really went far in discriminating against this community but also people who associate with them.
“So we will continue to press the government, to press the legislature to change these laws and provide human rights for all Nigerian people regardless of their sexual orientation.”
She, however, did not disclose if the US would impose sanctions on the countries with anti-gay laws to achieve its objectives.
Thomas-Greenfield was optimistic that the U.S would win the fight to protect the LGBT community.
She said, “With what is happening in the US, you can determine how far we are willing to go. We strongly believe human rights for all people and we are particularly opposed to legislation that actually targets the gay community for discrimination.
So we are prepared to push this as a policy not just in Africa but across the world.”

President Buhari Refuses To Meet With Saraki

President Muhammadu Buhari has resisted fresh moves by the Senate President, Senator Bukola Saraki, to formally meet with him, SUNDAY PUNCH has learnt.
An official in the Presidency who confided in one of our correspondents on Saturday said the President and the Senate President had only met once since the latter’s emergence as the leader of the senate.
The official said all efforts by Saraki to have another meeting with the president, after the party’s National Executive Council meeting penultimate Friday, were rebuffed by Buhari.
The reliable source said the president of the Senate had at different times reached out to people to help him persuade Buhari to grant him audience.
Saraki had defied the All Progressives Congress to contest for the position of the senate president on June and emerged victorious after a controversial election that excluded a sizeable number of senators. The APC had endorsed Senator Ahmed Lawan as its candidate for the senate presidency.
The government official who spoke to SUNDAY PUNCH said, “The truth is that the President is still displeased with what transpired in the National Assembly, especially the Senate.
“Their encounter during the APC National Executive Council meeting, when they shook hands, was the first meeting between President Buhari and Saraki since he emerged as the President of the Senate.
“We are aware that Saraki has been going about begging people to assist him to plead with the President to meet with him.
That was one of the reasons why he visited former President Obasanjo.
“I can tell you that the President is very pained by what happened. He felt that since he had been transparent with the party, everybody should play that way. But since Saraki took that path, the President was and he is still pained. Let us just hope that at the end of it all, they will be able to put the matter behind them.”
Also speaking to SUNDAY PUNCH, a highly placed party official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the issue, told one of our correspondents that the handshake between the President and Saraki during the recent NEC meeting of the APC “was for journalists.”
He stated, “President Buhari is still upset because of what happened. If you read in-between the line his speech during our last NEC meeting, he reminded people who joined the party after it was formed not to rubbish the sacrifices made by party leaders.
“It was not for the fun of it that the President took time to go down the memory lane to trace the genesis of the APC.
“Although the President said he was prepared to work with anybody who emerged as leader in the National Assembly, he did not envisage a scenario where Saraki would emerge as the Senate President and Ike Ekweremadu, a member of the PDP, would emerge as the deputy president of the Senate.”
Asked whether or not the President might change his mind anytime soon, the source said, “Not until the governors, who were mandated by the NEC to resolve the matter in the National Assembly, bring the matter under control.”
When contacted, the Special Adviser to the Senate President on Media and Publicity, Mr. Yusuph Olaniyonu, said there was no cause for alarm. During a telephone interview on Saturday, Olaniyonu said Buhari had repeatedly told Nigerians that he believed in the independence of the parliament.
He explained that Buhari had had cause to formally communicate with on “state issues” and that they exchanged warm pleasantries at the APC NEC meeting held in Abuja.
He said, “The president of a nation can have private discussions with the Senate President or the Speaker of the House of Representatives anytime he likes.
“At the moment, President Buhari, probably wants the issue around the National Assembly leadership positions formally resolved before calling for such meetings.
He has said that he would not involve himself in the affairs of the legislature and we should respect his views.”
Olaniyonu explained that Saraki and Buhari had been having regular official communication and that such would continue because the Senate would have to approve all appointments made by the President.
Asked why the President had met with the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, without meeting with Saraki up till now, Olaniyonu answered that he was not aware of the Buhari-Dogara meeting.
He said, “I am not aware of that meeting you talked about.
If the meeting had held, the picture taken afterwards would have been published in the dailies. To the best of my knowledge, I don’t think there was anything like that. “
Also, the spokesperson for the pro-Saraki Senators of Like Minds, Dino Melaye, told one of our correspondents on Saturday that Saraki and Buhari met and had fruitful deliberation at the NEC meeting of the APC.
“The President and the Senate President met at the NEC meeting. We are all awaiting the outcome of the peace moves initiated at the meeting. For now, there is no cause for concern,” he said.
When contacted, the Special Adviser to President Buhari on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina declined comments

Scam Master: President Buhari’s ‘Son’ Arrested For Defrauding Unsuspecting Nigerians

A con man who has been posing as the son of President Buhari to dupe unsuspecting people has been arrested……
Sident Muhammadu Buhari so as to defraud unsuspecting Nigerians with the promises of giving them lucrative contracts from the government, has been arrested by operatives of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).
A statement from the FCT SARS say the suspect has continuously promised to secure contracts for his victims from the president, saying he had made billions of naira through this illicit venture.
He was also dropping names of top politicians and businessmen to convince his victims, often wielding superimposed photos of himself with the president and other top politicians.
**The statement reads:*-
“He mostly approached big contractors, who were desperate to see the president or any of the governors. He would put fake calls across to the supposed politicians in the presence of his victims and convince them to book appointments.
From there, he would demand that the politician’s security officials needed to be settled with huge amounts of money before the contractor would be granted audience with the president or the governor.”
But the fake president’s son ran into troubled waters when a duped contractor, after waiting for many weeks without getting to see the president as promised by the hoodlum, reported his ordeal to the police, complaining that after collecting lots of money from him, the scammer was yet to take him to the president.
To the surprise of the police operatives, the suspect turned out to be a criminal who has been on their wanted list for similar offences in the past.
The Police Public Relations Officer for the FCT command, Anjuguri Manzah, confirmed the story, saying that acting on a tipoff, SARS operatives arrested the suspect on Saturday, July 4, at about 2 am.
“The truth is that the suspect had defrauded so many people. To perfect his act, he paraded himself as the son of the president.
Three Mercedez Benz and one Peugeot 406 cars were recovered from him as exhibits.”
“You Were Advertising Drug Trafficking”, NDLEA Tells Davido Over Fans Mi Video

Nigerian Drug Law Enforcement Agency has set up a panel to investigate a music video released by Nigerian artiste, Davido, in which he displayed a substance suspected to be hard drugs.
The video of his track entitled, ‘Fans mi’, in which he featured an American rapper and member of the Maybach Group, Meek Mill, showed Davido with a briefcase filled with dollars and another bag filled with parcels of a substance suspected to be hard drugs.
The Director of Public Affairs of the NDLEA, Mr. Mitchell Ofoyeju, told SUNDAY PUNCH on Saturday that the investigative panel might invite the hip-hop artiste for questioning if the need arose.
He said, “I am aware that a panel is working on it (the video). The panel was set up soon after the video was released few weeks ago.
“When our attention was drawn to it, we viewed it and we discovered that it was improper. There is no moral lesson in it and he was just advertising drug trafficking."
“In the video, he exchanged a brief case supposedly containing narcotics for dollars."
He was displaying affluence in the video. If it (the plot) had climaxed in an arrest and possible detention, we would have congratulated him for partnering with us. But the way he portrayed drug trafficking in the video was a means to an end, which the end is a life of affluence which we disagree with.”
Ofoyeju said the anti-drug agency would conduct a full-scale investigation into the making of the video and to confirm whether it was censored before its release.
The NDLEA spokesperson further said, “We are looking at the issue holistically. We believe that there should be a body that was supposed to censor videos before they go out.
Those are the things we want to investigate and verify.
Was the video submitted for approval? If it was submitted, why was it approved, with such content?”
NDLEA had in June 2013 said controversial Nigerian actress, Tonto Dikeh, risked a minimum of 15 years in jail for encouraging the consumption of hemp.
Dikeh had on June 28, 2013, posted
photographs of a wrap of hemp and grains of the weed formed into the letters, ‘Happy birthday POKO.’
She also posted a photograph of herself and added the inscription, ‘Mi smoke ganja mi smoke weed while my hatez smoke ma gossip.’
Her picture is a close-up of her face that seemed to depict her in a high state.
As a result, the agency said it was keeping tabs on more celebrities in Nollywood and the music industry for drug trafficking, abuse and links with drug cartels.
LASTMA Official Slumps On Traffic Duty (Photo)

An official of the Lagos State Traffic
Management Authority on Saturday slumped while controlling traffic in the Idi Araba area of Lagos.
The official, whose identity could not be ascertained as of the time our reporter left the scene, was among those controlling a heavy traffic along Ishaga Road allegedly caused by an event at the Chapel of the Healing Cross, Idi-Araba.
There was also a heavy presence of security personnel on the road.
The official, who was busy with the heavy traffic situation under the scorching sun, fell down and began to gasp for breath.
The incident occurred at about 1:30pm.
His colleagues and bystanders had rushed to pull him off the road and made frantic efforts to resuscitate him. Some of the LASTMA officials were seen pounding his chest, while others poured water on him.
But when his colleagues realised that he was not responding to the first aid, they took him into their vehicle and drove off.

Lamido Cries Out From Prison: I’m Being Persecuted Over 2019 Presidency

After spending 72 hours with his two sons in Kano Central Prison, immediate past governor of Jigawa State, Sule Lamido, has imputed political motives to his incarceration.
According to the former governor, he is being persecuted by those who feel that they would not be able to actualise their presidential ambition with him around the political arena.
Lamido, who spoke exclusively to Sunday Vanguard through his media aide, Umar Kyari, yesterday, drew the attention of Nigerians and the international community to the attempt being made by those he called “my political enemies” to silence him using the instrumentality of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
Lamido pointed out that it was clear from the outset that there was a grand design to put him away in prison for a long time under the guise of money laundering and sundry charges so as to pave the way for his political enemies to have their way.
The former governor, whose many supporters relocated to the Kano Central Prison where they kept vigil over him and his two sons, said he was determined to prove to Nigerians that he was innocent but was merely being witch-hunted by those who feel threatened by his rising political profile.
Lamido’s spokesman said: “This current effort to frame and denigrate the former governor of Jigawa State with a view to rubbishing his high performance in office will come to naught at the end of the day.
“Lamido remains nothing but a scion of accountability and integrity who has always fought on the side of the people, particularly the downtrodden and the vulnerable, since he came into the national political scene.
“He remains unshaken over the trumped-up charges slammed on him by the EFCC knowing that he has not committed any offense to warrant being thrown into the prison over a bailable offense.
“But the refusal by his traducers to grant him and his sons bail when others charged same day and time for even more grievous offences were admitted to bail speaks volume of the intention and mindset of those who are after him.
“Nonetheless, Sule Lamido strongly believes that, after being imprisoned several times all in a bid to pave the way for sustained democracy in Nigeria, the current effort by the EFCC and others to humiliate him and his family over the so-called money laundering charges will not break his resolve to continue to fight on the side of the people.
“It is Lamido’s strong belief that having not committed any offense against the state to warrant being sent to prison, he and his two sons will be freed and vindicated against the wicked plot of their adversaries”.
Meanwhile, Lamido is said to have been overwhelmed by the large number of friends and well wishers from across Nigeria who have thronged the prison to show solidarity with him and his two sons.
A close source at the prison told Sunday Vanguard that Lamido was jolted by the show of love and solidarity that he shed what the source described as “tears of joy” on Friday.
The former governor reportedly came out on Friday afternoon in one of his best attires to the office of the prison controller with a view to getting close to all those who had thronged the prison yard to see him.
Sunday Vanguard learnt last night that Lamido and sons were likely to be admitted to bail tomorrow (Monday) as a vacation judge was most likely to hear their bail application on that day.
A source said Lamido’s associates had already prepared in many ways to meet whatever conditions the judge might stipulate for their release from prison pending the hearing of the case in September.
Lamido and his two sons, according to the charge sheet of the EFCC after what the anti-graft agency described as a thorough investigation, alleged during the arraignment of the accused persons at a Federal High Court sitting in Kano, that they laundered N1.35 billion.
They were slammed with a 28-count charge bordering on criminal breach of trust.
The trial judge, Justice Evelyn Anyadike, adjourned the case till September 28 while ordering that the suspects be remanded in Kano Prison.
Anyadike, however, ruled that the case will be handed over to a vacation judge to listen to the accused persons bail application while the judiciary goes on vacation today.
